Grade Composition

You are expected to come to class prepared and ready to contribute to the lectures, discussions and exercises. Your participation in class is required and will have a significant influence on your final grade. Your final grade for this course is a function of:




Summary and Critique of Articles (written, 2 pages; individual, take-home)


IS Scales Part I (written, individual, take-home)


IS Scales Part II (written, individual, take-home)


Research Paper (written, team of 2: problem, question, literature review, hypothesis, model, items)

Summary and Critique of Articles are written, individual, take-home assignments. They are open book, open notes, and open readings. You can also use the research resources of USC and the Web. However, any form of collaboration in your individual assignment is strictly forbidden. Unless you are assigned to work in class as a group member or project team member, you should prepare all your assignments individually, with no external help.

The objective of this assignment is to summarize an article's (1) research problem, (2) question, (3) hypotheses, (4) model and underlying theory including key assumptions, (5) items (if empirical), (6) research design, and (7) findings. Furthermore, based on this analysis please provide a critical review of the article.

Your write-up of each case must be typed and will be limited to two single-spaced, letter-size pages with a font size of 12 points. This to include tables, figures, footnotes and references. This homework assignment is typically due one week after it has been assigned. All written assignments must be submitted per the instructions. Do not submit assignments via email without prior approval. Please make sure that your name, title of the assignment and date is displayed on the first page of your submission. This assignment has to be submitted as a Web page so that it can be posted to be accessible to all peers.

IS Scales. This deliverable will be submitted in two parts: Part I as the midterm and Part II as the final exam together with the research paper. Both parts are written, individual and take-home assignments. They have to be delivered as a Web site. Please avoid using MS-Frontpage and use, for example, Dreamweaver instead or write it in HTML.

The objective of this assignment is to provide an overview of multi-item measures for IS research. Constructs will be assigned to each student. Each student has to compile a literature survey and extract construct definition, description, samples, validity and source into a table. Wherever possible, download reference material and link and submit it with your Web site. Please make sure that your name, title of the assignment and date is displayed on the first page of your submission.

Research Paper is a team project of two students max. and due as the final exam. The write-up has to include sections on (1) research problem, (2) question, (3) literature survey, (4) hypotheses, (5) model and underlying theory including key assumptions, (5) items, and (6) research design. Please make sure that your name, title of the assignment and date is displayed on the first page of your submission.

Use of References. For all of your assignments make sure that you use the course material and literature. Please back up your description, analysis or recommendation with references whenever appropriate. References have to be relevant and referencing has to be done properly. A short reference is inserted in parentheses within the text where it is used. A complete reference is listed alphabetically in a references section at the end of your write-up. The short reference includes the author’s last name, year of publication and page number.

For one, the use of references is a sign that you know the relevant literature. For another, it demonstrates your efficiency as you leverage existing knowledge and avoid re-inventing the wheel.

Therefore, appropriate use of references is an important component of the grade of every single assignment in this course.

Readings are either required or recommended.

Required reading (RQ) means that I expect every student to be familiar with this paper.

Recommended readings (RC) provide an opportunity for students to go beyond what is required for an average evaluation.

With some exceptions, readings may not be discussed explicitly during sessions. However, knowledge of the literature will be required to contribute in our classroom discussions and in order to provide appropriate references in your assignments. Readings have to be obtained by the student using USC/Marshall School of Business resources..

Lecture notes and figures may be made available either on paper or electronically as PDF files after class. If additional readings are deemed necessary, they will be provided in advance.



In general, USC Academic Integrity Standards, as cited in the Faculty Manual will be enforced. Students caught in collaboration on individual assignments, for example, are subject to a summary “F” for the assignment and course.
