"If
you can't measure it, you can't manage it."
-
Peter Drucker
Overview
It is rare when a
single system can be identified whose benefits are so clear and whose
impact is so substantial that there can be little question about its value
to the organization. One concern has been about the tendency of performance
measurement to become over-elaborate, to concentrate on 'measuring the
measurable' and as a result to miss the big picture. It can easily become
a matter of counting the trees rather than monitoring the growth of the
forest.
Peter Drucker's quote
emphasizes the importance of being able to measure something in order
to manage it. It is difficult to measure IS performance because of its
integrated nature with other systems.
